Managed Flexibility

Balancing Mechanism (BM) - The Balancing Mechanism (BM) is a near real-time market run by National Grid that corrects the balance in supply and demand. This market is one of the highly-prized revenue streams with prices known to exceed £1000/MWh. SmartestEnergy currently manage over 100MW in the BM and have performed consistently in the Top 5 supplier ranking. Optional Downward Flexibility Management (ODFM) - To help manage changing system conditions National Grid have implemented ODFM, a service that allows them to access downward flexibility that is not currently accessible in real time, also giving them the ability to control output from flexible generation they cannot currently access through the Balancing Mechanism. The average revenues for solar and wind assets taking part since the ODFM service started in Spring 2020, is approximately £2,500/MW. We can also connect your generation asset to other reserve and frequency response services, including Short Term Operating Reserve (STOR) and Frequency Response services, along with future market opportunities as and when they become available. How actively do you engage with the wholesale market? How controllable is your generation asset? (e.g. can you respond quickly to market price triggers?) Do you have internal expertise and sufficient resource to manage how you sell and optimise your power? Do you have a high level of control over your generation output?
